CASL

Connecticut Association of School Librarians

Preparing for a four day workshop with 15 teachers in our district on August 10, 11, 12 and 13. Every attempt will be made to look at integrating literacy rather than technology. We will use David Warlick's Redefining Literacy 2.0 as our "guide" (http://www.amazon.com/Redefining-Literacy-David-Franklin-Warlick/dp... )
and some workshops attended at NECC by 7 of us from Westport (http://wnecc09.pbworks.com).
We will look at some of the recent changes that are impacting new teaching and learning strategies AND the need to focus on an expanded set of literacies -- called "Contemporary Literacy" by David Warlick. We will identify the relative advantages of selected ITL tools (such as tools to create screencasts, image and video editing tools, interactive collaborative communication tools, social networking bookmarking tools, and programming tools). We will look at specific curriculum objectives that can be achieved more efficiently and effectively utlizing one or more of these tools and determine some assessment components.
The ultimate goal of the workshops is to ensure that contemporary literacy and the set of tools used during the workshops are presented to all teachers in the district through each school's ITL (Information & Technology Literacy) committee.
I will post an update in October regarding the ultimate success of this initiative.
