Joint conference with CLA

I just returned from a meeting this morning with CLA's Conference Committee. Judy Beahan also represented CASL at the meeting. It looks like CLA will hold its 2010 conference in either April or May at the Mohegan Sun. The CLA folks are delighted to have CASL involved in their conference, as we're hoping to have one day of their two-day conference devoted to issues of common concerns to both of our organizations.…

Contemporary Literacy

Preparing for a four day workshop with 15 teachers in our district on August 10, 11, 12 and 13. Every attempt will be made to look at integrating literacy rather than technology. We will use David Warlick's Redefining Literacy 2.0 as our "guide" (http://www.amazon.com/Redefining-Literacy-David-Franklin-Warlick/dp/1586833332 )

and some workshops attended at NECC by 7 of us from… Continue

My Last Day at ALA

There are over 27,000 people at ALA Chicago this year!

Giving a report of the 2009 Affiliate Assembly at ALA annual to the AASL board this morning was my last duty as chair. The affiliates sent 5 commendations and 6 concerns to the AASL Board pictured below.

AASL commendations are given for outstanding programs or events that foster or support the goals and objectives of AASL, THE advocate for school libraries and school library… Continue

AASL Affiliate Assembly

We had our second meeting of the Affiliate Assembly today. AA is similar to our Senate; there are two representatives from each of the state associations and one regional association, New England. Our region is well represented and meets frequently throughout the year. Other regions that cover a wide area are not as lucky as we are in that respect. CASL had three board members represent them: Lucia Rafala, Mary Lou Cassotto and Jackie Galante. I am the Affiliate Assembly chair this year. My… Continue

AASL celebrates L4L and reading REAL books

What a wonderful morning. We started it off with a celebration of L4L. Susan Ballard (NH), the chair of the Implementation Committee, cut the cake.

Susan shared a wonderful quote from R. L. Sharpe "Isn't it funny that princes and kings, and clowns that caper in sawdust rings, and common people, like you and me, are builders for eternity? To each is given a bag of tools, a shapeless mass, and a book of… Continue

ALA in Chicago

Friday was a busy day filled with meetings. I had an interesting meeting with the Knowledge Quest board at the ALA offices.

It's always fun to put faces with the names we see in publications. Like most of us, they were concerned with KQ's role and how to be the most effective in a 2.0 world. All of our associations have debated the "pay wall" of free or member only. So much of what ALA offers is free to anyone. It makes you wonder why you should become… Continue

From AASL L4L training in Chicago

Check out the 2020 Forecast. Interesting. Also look at how Londonderry Public Schools in NH, under Susan Ballard's leadership, have aligned their curriculum with AASL, ISTE, and P21 with the explicit skills addressed for each. They did a fabulous job!!! Illinois has also done a great job.… Continue

Use of Emerging Technologies in the Classroom

One of the more interesting sessions from NECC that I attended was on Wednesday for the program Using Emerging Technologies to Create Collaborative Learning Environments. Here again, the emphasis was on Web 2.0 applications, and how they have eliminated the time and location constraints in teaching. The primary presenter, Dr. Leigh Zeitz, posted much of the information on his blog Dr.ZReflects . Scroll down to the second posting on the page… Continue

Library Tools Smackdown Follow Up

For those on the fence as to joining Twitter, and as a follow up to Joyce Valenza's Library Tools Smackdown session, she has set up a link to join the group if you're on Twitter. In addition, at the bottom of page there are links for building your network through Twitter. That link is here.
